Diablo 4 - A Quick Guide to Hellbreaches

Season 5 of Diablo 4 introduces a wealth of new post-game content, offering players the chance to earn Mother's Gifts and with them unlock various seasonal rewards. A notable addition are the Hellbreaches - compact dungeons that can be repeated as many times as you desire, offering substantial rewards to players who dare venture inside and tackle the tougher challenges found inside.
In this guide, we will explain how to locate Hellbreaches on the map, as well as provide tips on how to maximize your rewards during each run, so that you can make the most of this new endgame activity.
Locating the Hellbreaches
Hellbreaches can be found in specific locations across the game world. These short, randomized dungeons can be identified by their unique icons, which resembles a standard dungeon symbol, but with an added green seasonal leaf. Note that these icons appear as only a green dot when zoomed out.
There are a total of three Hellbreaches currently in the game, and they can be located in the following regions:
- Deep Forest, Scosglen
- Gae Kul, Kehjistan
- Chambatar Ridge, Dry Steppes
Do not worry about not being able to find these locations. The questline will bring you to each of these as the narrative unfolds.
How To Complete the Hellbreaches
Once inside, Hellbreaches are broken up into three sections. The first section will have a goal, such as defeating a specific enemy, and will reward you with Burning Aether.
Upon entering a Hellbreach, players will find the dungeon divided into three distinct sections. The first section will present a specific objective, such as defeating a particular enemy. Upon completion of this section, the player will be rewarded with Burning Aether.
After clearing this, players must then choose a challenge to be added to the second section of the Hellbreach. The selected challenge will increase the difficulty of the dungeon going forwards, but also provide additional Burning Aether as a reward, the amount of which depends on the challenge chosen.
Keep in mind that selecting a challenge is mandatory in order to progress further into the Hellbreach.
The second section will unfold similarly to the first, featuring another objective - often similar to the initial goal - with another objective to complete, along with whichever additional challenges the player selected earlier.
Upon reaching the third and final section, players will encounter a boss encounter. Before initiating the fight, players will have the option to choose the difficulty level of the boss. Players may choose to fight the boss without any additional difficulty. On the other hand, players can choose to face a more powerful version of the boss, which will yield a significantly greater Burning Aether reward, but will also demand a stronger character build and gear to overcome. It is important to remember that you only have one chance to fight the boss, so choose wisely.
Rewards and Spending Burning Aether
Upon completing a Hellbreach, players will have the opportunity to spend their accumulated Burning Aether on one of three chests. The most expensive of these is the Spoils of Hell II chest, which will require the maximum amount of Burning Aether to unlock, but will also contain the best rewards. This chest can only be accessed by those who have taken on and survived the most challenging encounters within the Hellbreach, similar to the rewards for completing Nightmare Dungeons, so plan accordingly.
It's important to note that Burning Aether earned during a Hellbreach is only valid for that specific run, and will not carry over once the player exits. As such, players are advised to spend their Burning Aether as they see fit, as they will not be able to save or accumulate it across multiple Hellbreach runs.
