While the most common player choices in Baldur's Gate 3 have been experienced by millions, as highlighted by Larian's own data, the rarest endings have only been witnessed by a minuscule fraction of the game's expansive player base. This speaks not only to the sheer scale of the audience engaging with the title, but also to the intricate branching narratives and the specific decisions required to unlock these esoteric outcomes.

One such obscure ending is reserved exclusively for the githyanki warrior, Lae'zel, and as of the game's one-year anniversary, a mere 34 players out of the millions who have explored the Forgotten Realms have managed to uncover this exceptionally rare conclusion.

With the release of Patch 5, Larian introduced a range of character-specific endings for Baldur's Gate 3, as well as an epilogue that reunites the surviving members of the player's adventuring party for a celebratory gathering hosted by the enigmatic figure, Withers. These unique character-focused conclusions can be accessed by designating one of the typical party members, rather than the main protagonist Tav or the githyanki warrior Durge, as the avatar character.

To unlock Baldur's Gate 3's rarest ending, players must take control of the githyanki warrior, Lae'zel, which also alters the game's opening since she is the first NPC encountered by any avatar character besides the player's own protagonist.

Most of the game's Origin characters offer two diverging narrative paths for players to explore, and in Lae'zel's case, these options involve either remaining loyal to the githyanki empress, Vlaakith, or siding with the exiled Prince Orpheus.

Lae'zel's least-witnessed ending requires the extreme edge case of the player staying loyal to Vlaakith, only to then fail the githyanki empress by choosing to become a mind flayer when offered the choice by the Emperor - a decision that is completely antithetical to keeping Vlaakith, the githyanki's immortal ruler, content. Finally, at the very end of the game, the player must make the fateful call to Vlaakith as mind flayer Lae'zel, which will result in Lae'zel's ascension being denied. Faced with this cosmic rejection, Lae'zel is given the choice to end her own life, an outcome that an incredibly small fraction of players have elected to pursue.

It is unsurprising that only 34 players have witnessed this particular narrative conclusion, given that Lae'zel's loyalty to the githyanki empress Vlaakith ultimately leads to her demise. Siding with Vlaakith results in Lae'zel undergoing the Ascension process, which involves her being killed and then resurrected as a type of elite, undead servitor who will forever serve the immortal queen. This ending, in which Lae'zel essentially becomes a "gith zombie," is bleak enough that most players likely presumed it to be the worst possible outcome for the beloved githyanki companion.

Still, it speaks to the incredible richness ofBaldur's Gate 3' that, even a year after it's release, with numerous updates from Larian Studios, players still continue to uncover new discoveries about the game's richly detailed world and narratives. At times, this has required direct input from the developers themselves, who have shared specific statistical data - a testament to the remarkable depth and complexity woven into the Forgotten Realms setting. As the years progress, there will undoubtedly be even more secrets and hidden narrative paths for players to uncover, potentially including other exceedingly rare or challenging endings as challenging to achieve as Lae'zel's most tragic fate.
